The story behind the dance is that a medicine man crafted his granddaughter a jingle dress after she became ill. After the author completed “Why We Dance,” she realized she wasn’t too old to begin learning how to jingle dress dance.

Southern Ute Museum recognizes Russell Box Sr.’s lifetime of artistry with new exhibit

Russell Box Sr. is an 88-year-old Southern Ute elder who has been painting since childhood. He started making art regularly while attending boarding school in Santa Fe. His paintings often symbolically depict animals to show relationships between people, nature, and the Creator.
