Indian Health Services is receiving millions of dollars for the first time from the federal government to help eliminate HIV in Indian Country.

Agencies across the U.S. Health and Human Services Department have developed a lofty plan to end the HIV pandemic in the country by 2030.

The initiative is hoping to reduce the number of new HIV infections in the United States by 75% by 2025, and then at least by 90% by 2030, for an estimated quarter of a million total HIV infections averted, according to HHS (Health and Human Services) website part of that goal from the federal government is to financially assist Indian Health Services in treatment and prevention of AIDS on Native lands.

This is the first time - there has been federal support and funding for this initiative.

Rick Haverkate, the National HIV and Hepatitis C program consultant for Indian Health Services, say cases of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections are on the rise in Indian country, KSUT’s Sarah Flower reports.

The deadline for tribes, tribal organizations, and urban Indian organizations to apply for the funding is June 17, 2022.
