La Plata County joins the San Juan National Forest in announcing that they, too, are lifting fire restrictions in unincorporated county areas on Thursday. According to a news release, recent precipitation has lessened wildfire risks, allowing local chiefs to decide to lift restrictions. However, officials say many fuel areas remain dry enough and can be a threat for lightning and human-caused fires.
La Plata County officials say that residents should still be mindful of flammable material within 3 feet of a campfire ring and to only make a fire when there is a shovel and sufficient water nearby. They also remind residents never to leave a fire unattended. Bayfield, Ignacio, and Durango do not have fire restrictions in place currently.
