The plague is the cause of death for one Archuleta County resident. According to San Juan Basin Public Health Department, this is the second plague death in two years. Tribal Radio’s Sarah Flower reports.
It's important to remember that the plague is a rare but serious disease, and it's important to take precautions to avoid exposure.
Here are some tips for staying safe from the plague:
- Avoid contact with wild rodents and their fleas.
- If you have pets, keep them on flea and tick prevention medication.
- If you find a dead rodent, don't touch it. Wear gloves and a mask to dispose of it properly.
- If you're going to be in an area where the plague is present, wear long pants and sleeves, and use insect repellent.
If you think you may have been exposed to the plague, seek medical attention immediately. The plague is treatable with antibiotics if caught early.
