U.S. Department of Energy awards Energy Fuels Inc.
KSUT | By Clark Adomaitis
In December, the US Department of Energy announced four contracts with uranium producers in the United States. According to World Nuclear News, a trade publication, these contracts will shore up the domestic supply of uranium and the nation’s backup power supply for nuclear power plants.
Energy Fuels Inc. was awarded one of the contracts worth some $18.5 million. Energy Fuels operates the only conventionally-operating uranium mill in the nation, in White Mesa, Utah.
For decades, the Ute Mountain Ute tribe has protested Energy Fuels uranium milling activities. Members of the tribe who live nearby claim that the facility creates environmental concerns for the community.
